Eggs To Donate

No one expects to have more eggs than they can consume. But once your flock gets too large, it gets harder and harder to use up all the eggs yourself. Before you know it, you have an entire carton full of eggs that you can’t use yourself. You might be thinking, “Should I donate or sell my extra chicken eggs?” These might seem like easy tasks, but each can pose an obstacle. Through the Eggs To Donate Program, ICT Food Rescue helps facilitate surplus egg pickups from farmers to nonprofit organizations in need of that extra protein. Eggs are a very valuable resource to almost all nonprofits that serve a food insecure population, farm fresh eggs are very nutrient-dense and provide 6.3 grams of protein apiece.

In Wichita, city regulations allow residents to have up to three chickens without a permit. A permit costs $25 a year and allows a household to keep up to a dozen hens. Roosters are not allowed in the city limits, although there are probably few residents of certain neighborhoods who haven’t heard one crowing.

ICT Food Rescue staff utilizes the Food Rescue US software to coordinate volunteers, known as food rescuers, to pick up eggs from farms within city limits and distribute them to one of our receiving nonprofit partners. This software allows ICTFR to share location notes critical to volunteers completing the rescue, schedule effectively, and record data related to program goals. ICTFR will be responsible for marketing and fundraising to expand the program sustainably. ICTFR will work to create more partnerships with chicken farmers in our community and spotlight their participation via social media platforms and marketing fliers.
