Game To Grub
This program will educate, advocate, and recruit hunters to participate in programs such as, Farmers and Hunters Feeding The Hungry and Kansas Hunters Feeding The Hungry. ICT Food Rescue will highlight the work of these organizations to draw more volunteers and meat donors. One deer has the potential to yield 50-60 lbs of protein rich meat that can be distributed to over 18 nonprofit organizations in Wichita through the coordination of ICT Food Rescue.
Venison—even taken from a slob, cornfed buck in the Midwest—has less fat than beef does. Three ounces of lean beef contain 247 calories and 15 grams of total fat. Three ounces of venison contain 134 calories and only 3 grams of total fat. Most importantly, venison contains about one sixth the amount of saturated fat that beef does. Venison has more protein: 26 grams to 23 grams in beef. The only category in which venison loses is cholesterol: 95 mg to 76 mg in beef, according to Livestrong.com. Venison also has more vitamins and minerals per serving than beef does. It has advantages in iron, vitamin B6, niacin, and riboflavin.
The staff of ICT Food Rescue will create an outreach campaign to partner with Sportsman Organizations, which will create awareness and educate all hunters that sportsmanship can also be used for good. The goal of this educational piece is to encourage more hunters to participate in the Game To Grub Program thus resulting in more pounds of venison delivered to the food insecure population of Wichita, KS. `
